Named for the influential Rixey family who arrived in the early 1800s from Fauquier County, Rixeyville was established in 1818 when Revolutionary War veteran Richard Rixey and his four sons—John, Presley, Charles, and William—purchased thousands of acres from the Pendleton family. The community's postal service began that same year in a log cabin, making Rixeyville one of Virginia's oldest continuously operating post offices with over 200 years of service. Located on Virginia State Route 229, approximately 8 miles north of Culpeper, this unincorporated community has historically been centered around agriculture and farming, with the rural landscape characterized by open fields, rolling hills, and historic homes that embody the traditional pastoral setting of Virginia's countryside. Notable Rixey family descendants include Rear Admiral Presley M. Rixey, Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy, and Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Eppa Rixey.
