Madison Virginia Area Information

Established in December 1792 from Culpeper County, Madison County was named to honor the Madison family that owned land along the Rapidan River—the same family that produced James Madison, "Father of the American Constitution" and fourth President of the United States. The Town of Madison was formally established on January 6, 1800, when the General Assembly ordered fifty acres around the courthouse to be laid off in lots with convenient streets, responding to a petition from one hundred citizens.

Madison's prosperity flourished in the 1850s with the completion of the Blue Ridge Turnpike, a remarkable 56-mile toll road connecting New Market to Gordonsville that transformed the town into a major stopping place for stagecoaches and commerce. Many of the Town's most distinguished residences were built during this prosperous era. This historic Virginia community seamlessly blends its presidential heritage with scenic Blue Ridge Mountain views, making it a distinctive location for property investment in Orange County's rolling countryside.
