Historic Warrenton: From Crossroads to County Seat

Warrenton originated as a strategic crossroads where the Falmouth-Winchester and Alexandria-Culpeper roads intersected. This vital junction featured a trading post known as the Red Store, establishing the settlement's commercial importance in the region.

The area's significance grew when a courthouse was constructed in the 1790s, giving the settlement its initial identity as Fauquier Courthouse. On January 5, 1810, the Town of Warrenton was officially incorporated and named to honor General Joseph Warren, a distinguished Revolutionary War hero.

Revolutionary-era statesman Richard Henry Lee donated the land that would become the county seat. Warrenton claims notable historical connections: John S. Horner, who served as Secretary of Wisconsin Territory and Acting Governor of Michigan Territory, was born here, while John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, hailed from nearby Germantown (present-day Midland).
